Alberta is quickly becoming a top destination for Canadians looking for more affordable living, strong economic opportunities, and a better quality of life. Here’s why so many people are making the move:
Step 1: Research & Planning
Before making the move, it's essential to research Alberta’s cities and determine which location best fits your lifestyle and career goals. Compare the cost of living, job opportunities, and housing prices in cities like Calgary, Edmonton, and Red Deer. Additionally, create a budget that accounts for moving expenses, deposits, and initial setup costs.

Step 2: Buying vs. Renting

One of the most critical decisions you'll need to make is whether to buy or rent in Alberta. While homeownership is more affordable in Alberta compared to other provinces, securing a mortgage requires proof of stable income. Many newcomers are unaware that lenders require guaranteed employment before approving a mortgage. If you don’t yet have a job lined up, renting may be the best short-term solution until you secure employment. Consulting with an experienced mortgage broker, like myself, can help you understand your financing options and prepare for homeownership in Alberta.
Step 3: Preparing for the Move
Hiring a reputable moving company can make your relocation much smoother. If you're handling the move yourself, start decluttering and packing non-essential items well in advance. Be sure to schedule disconnections for utilities at your current home and set up mail forwarding through Canada Post.

Step 4: Settling into Alberta

Upon arrival in Alberta, there are a few essential tasks to complete. Pick up your home or rental keys and conduct a walkthrough to ensure everything is in order. Register for Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP) as soon as possible and transfer your driver’s license and vehicle registration. Note: in Alberta you require an out of province vehicle inspection to be able to register your vehicle! Additionally, set up your utilities, internet, and other essential services to make your new home comfortable. Take some time to explore your new neighborhood and connect with local communities.

Step 5: Finding Employment & Schools

If you haven’t already secured employment before your move, now is the time to start applying for jobs. Alberta has a variety of job search resources to help you find opportunities that match your skillset. If you have children, enrolling them in a local school or daycare should also be a priority. Additionally, consider joining local networking groups or community events to build connections and make settling in easier. When in doubt search your community's name in Facebook and see if you can join a group that will inform you of all your community has to offer.
